二甲基亚砜（DMSO，分子式 (CH3)2SO = C2H6OS）是一种含硫的极性非质子溶剂，常温下为无色透明、稍带苦味、几乎无臭的液体（低温下可结晶为白色针状固体）；是已知溶解范围极广的「万能溶剂」之一——可与水以任意比例混溶，也溶于乙醇、丙酮、乙醚、苯、氯仿等多数有机溶剂，并能溶解许多无机盐、高分子、油脂与生物活性物质（甚至硫磺、碘）。具有强吸湿性。

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, (CH3)2SO = C2H6OS) is a sulfur-containing polar aprotic solvent, a colorless clear, slightly bitter, nearly odorless liquid at room temperature (crystallizes to white needles when cold). It is among the broadest-spectrum 'universal solvents' — miscible with water in all proportions and soluble in ethanol, acetone, ether, benzene, chloroform and most organic solvents, and dissolves many inorganic salts, polymers, oils and bioactive substances (even sulfur, iodine). Strongly hygroscopic.

DMSO is made by oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (e.g., with nitrogen dioxide or hydrogen peroxide). Industrially used in: pharma (synthesis medium, transdermal penetration enhancer), electronics (photoresist stripper, semiconductor cleaning, Li-battery electrolyte co-solvent), fibers (PAN carbon-fiber spinning, acrylic/acetate solvents), aromatic & butadiene extraction, agrochemical solvent/additive, paint stripper, and cryoprotectant for cells/tissues. Low toxicity but can induce skin sensitization.

Operators wear dense solvent-resistant gloves (nitrile/fluoroelastomer), chemical goggles and impermeable clothing; because DMSO enhances dermal uptake, change gloves immediately if contaminated by other chemicals and never touch skin with contaminated gloves. Ventilate; avoid prolonged vapor/mist inhalation.

Incompatibilities: segregate from strong oxidizers (e.g., peroxides, nitric acid, permanganate), strong acids, acid chlorides, phosphorus halides and strong reducers; DMSO can react violently with many materials (consult full SDS before use). Prefer stainless steel, HDPE or glass-lined containers.

⚠ Percutaneous risk (MOST IMPORTANT): DMSO markedly enhances skin absorption of co-exposed chemicals, carrying toxic/active substances through skin and causing accidental poisoning or sensitization. Do not handle with gloves/tools contaminated by other chemicals; rinse skin immediately with copious water if contaminated; avoid direct skin contact.
